The exhibition, Celebrating Ellen Hutchins, Ireland’s First Female Botanist, runs until 28th April 2017 in the Old Anatomy Building of Trinity College Dublin. Hosted by the Botany Department, it is for the staff and students of the School of Natural Sciences, and has three free public open access sessions, on the last Thursdays of each month, 23rd February, 30th March and 27th April, 5pm to 6:30pm.
It is a wonderful opportunity to see:
• The first ever exhibition of specimens of seaweeds collected by Ellen Hutchins in Bantry Bay over 200 years ago and kept in the Herbarium at Trinity
• Recently discovered letters written by Ellen to James Townsend Mackay at Trinity from 1805 to 1810
• Prints of Ellen’s exquisitely detailed and accurate watercolour drawings of seaweeds
• Ellen’s own descriptions of her botanising from letters to her brothers in 1807.
