TECHNIQUES
Drawing with pencil and pen and ink. Painting with watercolour.
APPROACH AND INSPIRATION
I like to produce paintings and drawings that will serve a purpose, for science, education or recording information for the future use.
I am inspired by looking at other artists’ work. I continually refer to the paintings of Franz Bauer. The best botanical art I have ever seen is being produced by contemporary artists, among them Hye Woo Shin, Sansanee Deekrajang, Hideo Horikoshi and Gulnar Eksi. My ambition is to try and draw and paint like them!
BIOGRAPHY
I studied at the National College of Art and Design, Ireland and have been working as a botanical artist for more than 20 years.
Since 2005 I have held the position of Orchid Artist to the Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Committee. To date I have contributed more than 300 orchid paintings to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Orchid Painting Collection. In 2014 I joined RHS Picture Advisory Panel which includes judging at the RHS Botanical Art shows.
I also undertake freelance work for the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and The Eric Young Orchid Foundation, Jersey, UK.
