We were honoured and delighted to have Dr Charles Nelson FLS VMM write the foreword to Heritage Irish Plants – Plandaí Oidhreachta last year. Dr Nelson’s article provided an insightful and comprehensive overview of the history of botanical illustration and of uniquely Irish garden plant cultivars on this small island.
We’re equally delighted to say that Dr Nelson has agreed to give a talk at the National Botanic Gardens on Saturday 18 November. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to hear Dr Nelson speak and we are thrilled that he has kindly accepted our invitation. What promises to be an interesting and enlightening event is free and open to the public, as well as our Members and Friends.
Dr Nelson was senior research botanist and horticultural taxonomist at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin for twenty years. In recognition of his contribution to raising the profile of Ireland’s plants and gardens, Dr Nelson was awarded the RHS Gold Veitch Memorial Medal in 2015 and the RHSI Gold Medal of Honour in 2016. He is well known to Irish botanical artists for his collaborations with Wendy Walsh on An Irish Florilegium and on Wild and Garden Plants of Ireland.
A raffle will be held at this event: the main prize is a mounted, archival print of Rona Orchard’s Daffodils, which featured on the cover of Heritage Irish Plants – Plandaí Oidhreachta.
